Over 1,300 individuals, ranging in age from 17 to 80, are volunteering their time without pay this week at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, also known as the Music Festival of Ireland. Easily recognizable by their bright yellow bucket hats and matching yellow T-shirts, these volunteers will be positioned throughout the city center to offer assistance, such as providing directions and helpful advice to attendees.
One of the volunteers, Addison McGowan, made a remarkable journey of 1,490 miles to take part in the event. Her involvement came about following a campaign led by Volunteer Now, in partnership with Belfast City Council and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the organization dedicated to Irish musicians. The festival itself, which lasts for eight days and continues until August 9th, is recognized as the world’s largest celebration of Irish music and culture.
McGowan is currently participating in a study abroad program through Florida Gulf Coast University. Belfast marks her first destination outside the United States, where she is volunteering as a welcome ambassador during the Fleadh. Through her experience, she has developed a genuine appreciation for traditional Irish music, expressing how much she enjoys both the instruments and the melodies.
Reflecting on her time at the festival, McGowan shared, “It’s awesome. I love seeing all the instruments, I love the music.” She added, “I’ve had the most fun in all the pubs getting the atmosphere, we don’t really get that in America.” Despite the rainy weather, she finds it enjoyable, noting, “I don’t mind the rainy weather; I think it’s great.” She also emphasized the welcoming and safe environment, saying, “Everyone’s admiring everyone and it feels like such a safe place to be, it’s so heartwarming.
