A recommendation from London Stadium followed revelations from a joint investigation by BBC Panorama and The Times, which uncovered that seven women had accused David Sullivan of sexually exploitative and predatory behavior. Sullivan has firmly denied all of these allegations. Prior to the broadcast of the investigation, he stepped down as the joint chairman of West Ham United, expressing a desire to concentrate on contesting what he described as “factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations concerning my personal life.” Despite stepping down, Sullivan remains the largest shareholder in the club.
The investigation also brought to light that Sullivan has been barred from having contact with West Ham’s women’s and youth teams for three years due to safeguarding concerns. London Stadium was unaware of these restrictions until after the BBC report was published. The ban followed a historic allegation raised with the Football Association in 2023. Sullivan has maintained that the allegation is false and stated that because he had never met any players from the academy or women’s teams privately during his 16 years at the club, he accepted the ban as a “meaningless restriction…for a quiet life.”
West Ham United suffered relegation from the Premier League in May and are set to play their first home game of the new season, a Carabao Cup fixture against Portsmouth, on Saturday. Throughout last season, Sullivan was a frequent presence at London Stadium, often photographed watching matches from the directors’ box. In response to media reports concerning a safeguarding issue managed by the club, a London Stadium spokesperson revealed that the stadium sought further information to ensure it could meet its safeguarding obligations. West Ham informed the stadium operators that the matter had been investigated and that the club did not consider Sullivan’s presence at the stadium to pose an ongoing safeguarding risk.
Nevertheless, London Stadium has advised that Sullivan should refrain from attending games due to the possibility of protests and anti-social behavior from some spectators. Sullivan has faced considerable criticism from West Ham fans regarding his management of the club, including a large protest by thousands of supporters in September calling for his exit. Although the club declined to comment on the stadium’s recommendation, it is believed they intend to collaborate with the stadium’s operators to enable Sullivan’s attendance at matches. Sullivan has not responded to a request for comment.
In a related development, Tony Livesey, a presenter with BBC Radio 5 Live for 16 years, departed the station on Monday. Livesey stepped back from his weekday late-night talk show in June amid the allegations against Sullivan. He had previously served as editor-in-chief for Sullivan’s publications, Daily Sport and Sunday Sport. One alleged victim claimed that Livesey arranged a meeting between herself and Sullivan in 1999. Livesey denied any recollection of introducing the woman to Sullivan and stated it was “not part” of his duties to do so. While he expressed “great sympathy for a woman who may have become a victim,” he rejected any implication that he had any involvement in the situation, calling the allegation “abhorrent.
