Justin Hardy, the British filmmaker renowned for directing a sequel to his late father Robin Hardy’s cult horror masterpiece The Wicker Man from 1973, has passed away at the age of 61. According to his family, he suffered a heart attack on Friday night. They remembered him as “a man of family, of boundless creativity” who remained “so full of life right to the end.”
Hardy, who earned Bafta and Emmy nominations for his work, was particularly recognized for the 2024 documentary Children of the Wicker Man, created alongside his brother Dominic. In addition to his work on the Wicker Man series, Hardy directed numerous historical documentaries and films for major broadcasters such as the BBC, Channel 4, and CNN. His projects included titles like Princes In The Tower, Trafalgar Battle Surgeon, The Relief Of Belsen, and Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen. The family expressed their heartbreak at his passing, especially saddened that he would not witness the premiere of Wrath of the Gods.
His brother Dominic spoke fondly of Justin, highlighting his “incredible appetite for life” and describing him as a “larger-than-life presence” who had truly become a filmmaker in his own right. Dominic praised the final film as “incredibly beautiful” and said it brought Justin great satisfaction to have created something new. Wrath of the Gods, inspired by rediscovered scripts and storyboards left by Robin Hardy, completes the trilogy that began with the original The Wicker Man and continued with the 2011 sequel The Wicker Tree. Justin Hardy also contributed to academia as a screenwriting instructor at University College London. He is survived by his wife Larissa and their four children
