Whiteley explained that “David Davis resigned his seat and stood again as a protest over the issue of civil liberties,” an event that led to 26 candidates running for election.
Before that, the earlier record was held by the Newbury by-election in Berkshire in 1993, which saw 19 candidates competing. This current election is notable for far surpassing those numbers, featuring 34 candidates altogether. Among these are 20 independents, marking another record for the most independent candidates in a single election.
