British girl group FLO is confidently aiming high as they continue to make waves in the music industry. Comprising Stella Quaresma, Jorja Douglas, and Renée Downer, the band reflects on their rapid growth and evolving creative process while working on their second album, *Therapy at the Club*. Starting their careers as teenagers, the trio says they have developed more confidence in trusting their instincts throughout the six months spent crafting the new record.
FLO first gained widespread attention with their 2022 hit “Cardboard Box” and have since earned notable recognition, including winning Best R&B/Soul Act at the 2026 MOBO Awards and securing their first Grammy nomination this year for their debut album *Access All Areas*, which was nominated for Best Progressive R&B Album. The group enjoys substantial streaming success, boasting over five million monthly listeners on Spotify and a significant following on TikTok, where they have amassed nearly 58 million likes. The promotion of their latest album has featured appearances on popular American platforms, such as an NPR Tiny Desk concert watched over a million times and a string of high-profile podcast interviews.
In discussing the band’s growth, Douglas highlights how others have sometimes been surprised by their creative input, emphasizing a shift from depending on external writers and producers. Quaresma acknowledges that early in their career, they leaned heavily on industry professionals but now feel confident standing on their own. Downer agrees that this increased involvement has led to their most genuine work yet, saying, “We’re definitely a lot more grown up. We’ve been a lot more involved, so this really is the best reflection of us at this point in time.”
*Therapy at the Club* explores themes of love in its more complicated forms, framed by memorable nights out that serve as backdrops to stories about heartbreak, healing, and friendship. The album title embodies the supportive role friends play during tough experiences, with Quaresma explaining it as “the idea that you’re having the worst time of your life, but your friends are saying, ‘No, you’re coming out, you’re going to dance and forget about it for a second.'” While R&B remains central to their music, FLO also sought to incorporate more pop elements this time, describing their experience producing the new album as a fun challenge that allowed them to blend genres. One standout track, “Remedied,” was co-written with Grammy-winning songwriter Amy Allen, known for her work with notable pop artists.
The band members adopted a new songwriting approach compared to their debut, choosing to write independently before sharing ideas with each other. Quaresma reflects on how this method deepened their appreciation of one another’s talents. Collaborations continue to be part of their process, with kwn, a rising British R&B singer, featuring on the track “Sex in Peace.” Downer comments on the natural chemistry with kwn, praising the effortless nature of their collaboration.
