Following a devastating flood caused by a quarry blast, the first minister has pledged a rapid inquiry and reassured affected residents with a commitment that “we have your back.” The flooding incident occurred in Gwaelod-y-Garth on the outskirts of Cardiff, where 15 homes sustained water damage, and 13 households needed to evacuate. The quarry involved, Taff’s Well owned by the Breedon Group, has expressed its intention to cooperate fully with authorities and will conduct its own internal investigation. The first minister emphasized the necessity of an “in-depth” investigation that would clarify the causes and ensure lessons are learned to prevent a recurrence.
Describing the nature of the flooding, the first minister noted it was unlike typical flood events but caused equally severe damage to homes. He remarked, “This is a very different flooding experience to what we usually see. But the devastation in people’s homes is just as bad as in any serious flooding incident.” At present, there appear to be no evident lasting environmental impacts downstream, although authorities remain cautious pending the investigation’s results.
Residents of Heol Berry, the area most affected by the flood, have been informed that they will receive assistance with temporary housing. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion near Taff’s Well around 12:30 BST on the Thursday when the incident began. Official sources confirmed that a surge of water up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) deep rushed down the hillside, flooding homes and forcing closures on Main Road in Gwaelod-y-Garth and Heol Goch between Gwaelod-y-Garth and Pentyrch.
