Dr Jess Neumann, an associate professor at the University of Reading, has observed that while some browning of grass during summer is typical, this year stands out due to the extensive areas of dry grass across parks, lawns, and gardens. According to Neumann, British plants lack the adaptations necessary to withstand prolonged periods of drought and heat, unlike flora in Mediterranean regions that are more suited to such conditions.
This summer has seen the emergence of a rapid, or “flash,” drought, which is particularly striking given that soil moisture, river flows, and reservoir levels were generally normal or above average following a very wet start to 2026. The situation has deteriorated quickly due to repeated heatwaves that have significantly increased evaporation rates, depleting soil and plant moisture. Consequently, the demand for water has risen sharply for agriculture, industry, and domestic use.
Dr Pauline Scheelbeek, associate professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, highlighted the potential consequences of this drought on food production. She warned that the scarcity of water could reduce crop yields, leading to limited availability of British produce and potentially higher prices in supermarkets. Additionally, some farmers are already facing difficulties due to low grass reserves, prompting them to feed livestock with winter feed during summer, which could result in shortages later in the year.
Concerns also extend to wildlife, with Professor Michael Singer of Cardiff University emphasizing that many UK animals and plants are ill-equipped to handle extreme drought conditions.
