A former funeral director has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after it was revealed that he neither buried nor cremated numerous bodies and instead gave grieving families the ashes of unrelated individuals. Robert Bush pleaded guilty to 67 offences following a police investigation at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull during March 2024, where authorities discovered 35 unburied bodies alongside more than 100 sets of ashes.
During the hearing at Hull Crown Court, Judge Justice Hilliard highlighted the profound emotional distress Bush inflicted, describing the suffering as “on a scale beyond comprehension.” It was further disclosed that Bush had defrauded almost 200 families, obtaining close to £500,000 under false pretenses. As part of the judgment, Bush was banned from acting as a director of any company for a 14-year period.
The defendant remained silent and displayed no visible reaction while the sentence was delivered from behind the glass dock. In her remarks, Judge Hilliard accused Bush of acting out of financial greed, emphasizing his apparent lack of compassion that enabled him to mistreat both the deceased and their families with confidence that his misconduct would go unpunished.
Moreover, the judge cautioned that anyone who had arranged cremations through Legacy could not be certain that the ashes they received actually belonged to their loved ones.
