A court has been informed that several victims of Robert Bush, a disgraced undertaker, have yet to receive refunds for funeral plans that turned out to be fraudulent. Over an 11-year period, Bush defrauded 172 individuals, amassing approximately £562,000, according to Hull Crown Court. The 48-year-old had operated through his business, Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, based in Hull.
Bush pleaded guilty to 67 offences connected to his business, which included failing to perform burials and cremations, theft from a dozen charities, fraudulent trading involving funeral plans, and other forms of fraud. During the sentencing hearing, emotional testimony was given by those affected. One woman shared that her parents had each paid £2,649 for funeral plans but had not witnessed the justice they deserved before passing away. Another victim reported not being reimbursed £5,000 for two policies she had purchased.
Maxine Hill, who knew Bush personally, spoke through tears as she recounted how her parents, Margaret and John, paid Bush in cash after he visited them at home and issued a handwritten receipt. Although her father’s bank initially reimbursed the payment, the money was later reclaimed after 90 days, with the bank stating there was no proof that he had not received the service promised. Tragically, both Margaret and John have since died—Margaret in May 2024 and John in June 2025.
Valerie Newton also gave a statement, revealing she was left out of pocket by £5,198. She expressed that Bush’s actions had shaken her trust in funeral companies to the extent that she and others were now hesitant to arrange funeral plans. “Shame on him for doing what he has done,” she said. Bush admitted to multiple counts involving illegal and deceitful practices over more than a decade, including fraudulent handling of ashes from 57 deceased individuals and egregious fabrications involving the remains of unborn babies.
