A firearm was discharged outside the York Mosque and Islamic Centre, leading to the arrest of a man, North Yorkshire Police have confirmed. The incident took place at around 02:15 BST on Bull Lane, near the mosque. Following the event, authorities apprehended a 44-year-old white male from York in connection with the case. This disclosure aligns with national police guidelines regarding the sharing of suspect information.
After the shooting, the suspect reportedly left the scene in a silver vehicle but was subsequently detained by police and remains in custody for further questioning. The weapon involved is believed to have been an air rifle, and fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the discharge.
Mohamad Douba, who serves as the president of the mosque, explained that police were alerted when one of the mosque’s community members noticed unusual behavior and heard what sounded like gunfire. He emphasized the prompt response from both the individual who raised the alarm and the police officers who promptly attended the location.
Douba expressed gratitude toward the alert community member for their quick action and reassured that no members of the mosque’s congregation, staff, volunteers, or students were harmed during the incident.
