Dame Penelope Keith, celebrated for her roles in *The Good Life* and *To The Manor Born*, passed away peacefully at her home on 29 June at the age of 86, having battled cancer. Her funeral was described by friends and admirers as “wonderful, beautiful and absolutely amazing.” The event drew large crowds who lined the streets of Milford, Surrey, to pay their respects as her coffin made its way through the town before the service held at Guildford Cathedral.
Gyles Brandreth, a broadcaster, author, and former politician, reflected on the service, highlighting its emotional depth. It caught her completely. She was very special.”
Many who knew Dame Penelope spoke warmly of her character, emphasizing her kindness and strong sense of community. Brandreth mentioned, “Her love of Surrey was in everything she did,” and added, “Her sense of community… belonging and working for the community was considerable.” Sarah Cliff, who described Dame Penelope as “Auntie Penny” from her childhood, called her “great fun.” She also praised Guildford Cathedral as “airy,” “light,” and “lovely” during her remarks on BBC Radio Surrey.
Longtime acquaintance Doreen Walford recalled their close relationship, noting that they had once lived nearby and worked together.
