A senior nursing assistant has been sentenced to two years probation along with 100 hours of community service after filming and sharing videos of patients suffering from advanced dementia. Among the recordings was footage of a patient in a bath, accompanied by offensive remarks. Ciara Corvan, aged 28 and residing in Cathedral View, Armagh, was employed at the Bluestone Unit of Craigavon Area Hospital during 2023 when the videos were taken.
The inappropriate conduct came to light when colleagues who received the videos reported the matter. Families of the patients expressed their distress, accusing Corvan of deriving amusement from humiliating individuals enduring the slow and painful decline of their mental faculties. Judge Patrick McGurgan, presiding over the case, described the nursing assistant’s behaviour as “demeaning to those you owed a duty of care to.” This case marks a first for Northern Ireland, with police highlighting it as the initial prosecution relating to the mistreatment of patients through degrading images and commentary.
In a joint statement, the families offered a reflection on the issue, criticizing the apparent moral decline associated with social media influences. They urged people to reflect on their online behaviours and to consider how they would wish their own relatives to be treated in similar circumstances, posing the question, “Please stop and think – if that was your mother or father, how would you want them to be treated?”
Corvan admitted guilt in May to seven charges involving four victims. The charges included videos portraying patients in vulnerable states, such as one patient being filmed in a bath and another in bed, as well as footage showing Corvan’s face uncomfortably close to a patient. While no physical abuse occurred, Judge McGurgan noted the offence represented a serious breach of trust, imposing the sentence under the Mental Health Order (NI) 1986. Outside the court, Detective Chief Inspector Claire McDonald of the Police Service of Northern Ireland stated that Corvan exploited the patients’ vulnerabilities for her own entertainment, stressing the significance of this case as a precedent intended to deter those in trusted positions from abusing their roles
