Meilir Rowlands, a 21-year-old from Landwrog in Gwynedd, experienced a drastic and painful change in his life after ceasing the use of topical steroid cream prescribed for his eczema. Having used these creams intermittently since infancy to manage his condition, Meilir decided to stop their application around three years ago. This decision led to a severe worsening of his skin condition, resulting in what is known as topical steroid withdrawal (TSW). At the most difficult moments, Meilir described the sensation as feeling “like being electrocuted every second,” which left him confined to bed and struggling with intense pain.
Eczema, which affects millions across the UK and worldwide, typically presents as dry, itchy, and red patches on the skin. Meilir’s eczema was initially managed with creams of increasing potency over the years. However, when he discontinued these steroids during his first year at university, the inflammation spread extensively, even to areas of his body where he had never applied the cream—such as his face and neck. Health experts like NICE emphasize that while TSW reactions are uncommon, they can occur with long-term or improper use of potent steroid creams. Meilir’s experience starkly illustrates this rare but severe response.
The impact of TSW was not only physical but deeply psychological for Meilir. He revealed, “It has taken such a toll on me mentally,” expressing feelings of confusion, fear, and exhaustion throughout his ordeal. The debilitating symptoms kept him mostly bedridden, making it difficult to perform everyday tasks. He lamented the loss of his previously active and social lifestyle, saying, “I was doing nothing while my mates went out and enjoyed their university life,” highlighting how isolating the condition had become.
Despite the challenges, Meilir previously led a vibrant life as a keen student and athlete, serving as vice-captain of a football team and participating in university societies. His story has also drawn attention from medical professionals concerned about TSW. Professor Sara Brown from the University of Edinburgh has secured research funding to investigate this poorly understood withdrawal syndrome, noting that current knowledge of eczema alone does not explain the patterns seen in TSW patients.
