Satellite imagery has revealed extensive smoke and damage resulting from a wildfire that has engulfed parts of north Wales. According to data analyzed by BBC Verify, approximately 951 hectares (2,350 acres) of the Rhinogydd mountain range in Gwynedd have been affected by the blaze which began earlier this month. In addition to this, NASA’s FIRMS satellite monitoring system has identified heat signatures at four distinct wildfire locations across Wales, specifically in Blaenavon (Torfaen), Presteigne (Powys), and Pentre Halkyn (Flintshire).
In response to the escalating situation, Natural Resources Wales announced plans to deploy a specialized firefighting helicopter to the Rhinogydd area on Friday morning following requests for aerial assistance. The Welsh government escalated the response by initiating “crisis management arrangements” midweek to address the multiple wildfires spreading across the country. Natural Resources Wales emphasized that while the helicopter will support operations in Rhinogydd, its availability will be continuously evaluated to meet other demands within Wales and the wider UK, ensuring close communication with fire and rescue services nationwide.
The initial signs of the fire in the Rhinogydd mountains were captured in satellite imagery on 13 July. Authorities have urged the public to steer clear of affected zones due to safety concerns, warning that some individuals who ventured into these areas have required emergency rescue. Chief Inspector Ian Roberts of North Wales Police highlighted that ignoring road closures and police cordons is dangerous and could lead to criminal charges, emphasizing the importance of following official instructions.
Meanwhile, the fires at Rhinogydd and Blaenavon are described by Siân Gwenllian, the cabinet minister for local government, housing, and planning, as the most significant wildfire events currently impacting Wales. She remarked, “Both remain active and are being managed reflecting the efforts of those involved.” She also noted that other wildfires across Wales have been successfully contained and are being monitored, underscoring the dedication and expertise of fire services. Additional incidents, such as a fire on Kilvey Hill in Swansea and ongoing fires at various Welsh locations, remain a focus for emergency personnel, who continue to work under challenging conditions to prevent further spread and protect lives and property
