A visitor on a day trip recounted to the BBC his efforts to rescue a mother and daughter who tragically drowned off a beach in Essex. Craig Bowe, aged 42, struggled against the incoming tide at West Mersea near Colchester on Wednesday evening after he was alerted by screams.
Bowe, a kitchen fitter from Northaw, was visiting the area from Hertfordshire to mark his daughter’s 10th birthday. Upon hearing a man shouting for help and spotting bodies in the water, he plunged into the sea three times. He successfully brought Shally and Samiha Rahman—aged 41 and 15 respectively—out of the water and assisted a seven-year-old boy onto a lifeboat.
Despite Bowe’s valiant attempts to save them, Shally and Samiha Rahman died while trying to rescue the boy, who had become stranded during a family day out from Barking, east London. The boy was airlifted to hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Friday. Additionally, three other individuals were transported by ambulance to a different hospital following the incident, which occurred around 17:35 BST.
Describing the scene, Bowe said, “When I got there, the first two people I saw were actually face down, so [it was] more serious than I initially thought.” After pulling Shally Rahman ashore where bystanders began CPR, he went back for her daughter. Then, aided by an unnamed man, he helped the seven-year-old child and another youngster, who were approximately 150 yards from shore, onto a lifeboat. Reflecting on the challenging conditions, Bowe added, “The waves were hitting me in the face. The current was definitely stronger.”
