A tragic incident occurred in West Mersea, near Colchester, on Wednesday evening, where a mother and daughter sadly lost their lives while trying to save a child from drowning. Shally Rahman, 41, and her daughter, Samiha Rahman, 15, were attempting to rescue a seven-year-old boy when they got into trouble in the water. Despite their efforts, both Shally and Samiha drowned during the rescue attempt.
According to Essex Police, the group involved in the incident all came from the same family and were originally from Barking, east London. The young boy they were trying to save remains hospitalized and is currently fighting for his life. The heartbreaking event unfolded as those present watched closely.
Beverly Smit, a 60-year-old witness to the event, spoke about a courageous individual who repeatedly swam out to help during the crisis. She recalled seeing the rescuer head into the water three separate times, managing to bring two children back to the shore. Smit emphasized the difficulty of the situation, highlighting the strong tide coming in and the cold temperature of the sea that evening.
Describing the scene, Smit said, “They were calling for help and the children and adults were out there. He swam out, I think, three times. Two of the children he brought back were not in good condition. It’s not an easy swim when the tide’s coming in – you’re swimming against the tide.
