To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the UK’s weekly album chart, an all-time ranking was unveiled on Wednesday. Oasis’s iconic album, (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?, has amassed an impressive total of 6.2 million chart units in the UK, combining both streams and sales, as reported by the Official Charts Company. The band experienced a resurgence in popularity last year during their widely publicized global reunion tour, where their performances prominently featured songs from this album, including notable tracks like “Some Might Say” and “Champagne Supernova.”
In 2022, Queen’s greatest hits compilation made history by becoming the first album to surpass seven million chart units in the UK. Following closely, only the Swedish pop group ABBA has achieved a similar feat, placing them in a rarefied ranking. Over the past decade, classic albums such as Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 release Rumours and Bob Marley’s compilation Legend have also climbed into the top ten of the all-time UK albums chart.
Despite receiving mixed reviews upon its release in October 1995, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 1996 and has remained enduringly popular. The track “Wonderwall” experienced a notable revival during the World Cup in North America when England fans and players sang it together. Additionally, the song “Don’t Look Back in Anger” took on a deeper emotional resonance when it was performed spontaneously at a vigil following the 2017 Manchester Arena tragedy. Becca Monahan and Chris Austin, interim co-managing directors of the Official Charts, praised Oasis’s lasting impact, stating, “Three decades on, its scale and influence remain extraordinary – a defining British record that continues to unite generations, fill stadiums and soundtrack lives.”
Looking back to the origins of the UK album chart, which launched on 22 July 1956 with Frank Sinatra’s Songs for Swingin’ Lovers! as the first number one, the Official Charts Company also highlighted the most-streamed albums of the 2020s. Leading this modern list is Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album Sour, featuring hits like “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U.” Since its June 2021 release, Sour has spent 268 weeks on the chart, striking a chord through its themes of heartbreak and loneliness. Rodrigo described her songwriting on the album as creating “like a friend for me,” in her 2022 Disney+ documentary Driving Home 2 U. Other prominent albums in this decade’s streaming list include Ed Sheeran’s = and Taylor Swift’s Folklore, with Swift placing two albums in the top ten along with contributions from artists such as Sabrina Carpenter, Noah Kahan, Dua Lipa, Harry Styles, SZA, and the late rapper Pop Smoke
