UK weather: Parts of country to get break in heatwave but dry spell to continue

This summer has been marked not only by prolonged periods of heat but also by significant dryness across many parts of the UK. Rainfall has been unevenly distributed, with particularly low levels recorded in the eastern and north-eastern areas of England. These regions have seen precipitation amounts amounting to roughly half of what is typically expected at this point in the season.

One notable example is Wisley in Surrey, which has now undergone 31 consecutive dry days. This extended dry spell is part of a broader trend affecting central England, where some areas are experiencing their longest period without rain in three decades. The persistence of such dry conditions is unusual and highlights the variability in weather patterns observed this summer.

Looking ahead, weather forecasts indicate that high pressure will continue to dominate the UK’s conditions over the coming week. This pattern suggests minimal rainfall in many locations, potentially extending the dry spell. However, the wettest spots are anticipated to be in north-west Scotland, where weather fronts could bring relatively heavier showers, potentially reaching around 30mm (1.18 inches) of rain during the week.

In addition to Scotland, a limited number of showers might occur near coastal parts of the country. Despite this, many inland regions are expected to endure at least another five days without any rain, prolonging the dry conditions further. This outlook implies continued challenges for areas already impacted by the summer’s dryness
