The government of Laos has stated that it is unable to assign blame or identify the specific cause behind the deaths of six individuals linked to methanol-contaminated alcohol. These fatalities occurred in November 2024 following an evening spent in the town of Vang Vieng. Among those who died were a British national, two Australians, two Danes, and one American.
According to the Laos Ministry of Public Security, a lack of autopsies on the deceased has left authorities without the forensic evidence needed to conclusively determine whether the deaths resulted from any individual’s actions or a particular cause. Meanwhile, the owner of the distillery implicated in the case is facing charges related to the sale of harmful food products and conducting an illegal business, but no charges have been filed regarding the deaths themselves. These offenses carry potential penalties of up to one year in prison and fines amounting to approximately £829 (or US$1,100, A$1,600).
The Australian government expressed significant disappointment in the decision not to pursue more serious charges. In reaction to the situation, Australia’s foreign ministry summoned the Laotian ambassador in Canberra to express their concerns over the incident and the legal response. The Ministry of Public Security also confirmed the discovery of dangerously high methanol levels in vodka produced by the distillery involved, although no autopsies were permitted on the victims’ bodies.
The individuals who lost their lives include 28-year-old Simone White from the UK; Australians Bianca Jones, 19, and Holly Morton-Bowles; Danish nationals Anne-Sofie Orkild Coyman, 20, and Freja Vennervald Sorensen, 21; and 57-year-old American James Louis Hutson. It is believed that the free shots served, containing methanol—a toxic substance often used in paint thinner but illegally added to alcohol to reduce production costs—were the cause. Methanol is colorless and tastes similar to ethanol, but even small amounts can be deadly. Once ingested, it quickly enters the bloodstream and is metabolized in the liver into toxic compounds such as formaldehyde and formic acid, which cause severe poisoning.
Many of the victims were staying at the Nana Backpacker Hostel, where some guests fell ill and failed to check out after November 13. Earlier this year, ten individuals connected to the hostel were charged with destroying evidence; they received suspended sentences and fines of roughly $185 (£135) each. Vang Vieng, the location of the incident, is a central Lao town popular among backpackers traveling through Southeast Asia. Recently, the UK government launched a public campaign warning tourists about the dangers of methanol poisoning, which can include symptoms such as vomiting, impaired judgment, loss of balance, drowsiness, abdominal pain, vertigo, difficulty breathing, and vision problems ranging from blurred sight to complete blindness
