Despite the diagnosis, the 48-year-old emphasized that she currently feels well and does not require any treatment. Laverne took to Instagram to explain her condition, noting that “smouldering myeloma” was a term she was unfamiliar with before her diagnosis. She described it as an asymptomatic condition, meaning it shows no symptoms but can develop into myeloma, a form of blood cancer, in some individuals.
This news comes two years after Laverne was treated for an unspecified cancer, which she reported being cleared of in November 2024. She explained that the risk of her smouldering myeloma advancing to active cancer is “pretty low.” Laverne also mentioned that many people her age are unaware they have this condition, as it often goes undiagnosed unless a person is closely monitored, such as cancer survivors like herself. She clarified that this diagnosis is unrelated to her previous cancer or recent surgery, describing it as “just one of those things.”
Laverne acknowledged that smouldering myeloma is a chronic illness with no current cure. Because it can affect the immune system, she will require ongoing monitoring through blood tests, MRIs, and bone marrow biopsies, which she admitted are unpleasant procedures.
