Llanyravon mum dies in GP surgery after waiting days for appointment

A woman tragically died after collapsing in a GP surgery while waiting for an appointment, according to details revealed during an inquest. Jaqueline Watkins, aged 66 and residing in Llanyravon, Torfaen, had been unwell at home for several days prior to seeking medical assistance from her GP practice.

The earliest appointment offered to Watkins was scheduled for 3:00 pm BST on Thursday, 18 June. However, she collapsed in the waiting room of Llanyravon Surgery before being seen by a doctor. Despite the immediate response and medical efforts from staff present, she could not be revived.

The inquest, held at Gwent Coroners’ Court on Tuesday, highlighted that Watkins was already seated when she suddenly collapsed at the surgery. Her family has expressed deep concerns regarding potential “missed opportunities” in the care provided by the GP service and believes further investigation is necessary.

A post-mortem examination was conducted, but no definitive medical cause of death was announced during the hearing. Watkins’ relatives stated, “We have many unanswered questions about the advice and care given.” Area Coroner Rose Farmer confirmed that a full inquest will take place in March of the following year
