Liverpool healthy weight programme shortlisted for national public health award

Liverpool City Council’s initiative, Liv Life Liverpool, designed to promote healthy weight and wellbeing, has been recognised with a shortlist nomination for the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Health and Wellbeing Award. This acknowledgment highlights the programme’s dedication to enhancing health outcomes and addressing inequalities throughout the city.

Delivered by ICE Creates under the council’s commissioning, Liv Life Liverpool offers a comprehensive, community-focused service aimed at adults, children, young people, and families. Unlike conventional weight management programmes, it adopts an emotionally aware and person-centred methodology, understanding that achieving and maintaining a healthy weight involves various social, economic, and environmental influences. The programme aims to empower participants by boosting confidence, expanding their knowledge and skills around food, encouraging physical activity, and fostering positive behaviour changes tailored to individual needs.

The service is accessible through a wide range of local venues including schools, children’s centres, primary care facilities, community hubs, and voluntary sector organisations. This ensures support is available within the everyday environments where Liverpool residents live, learn, and work. Since its inception, the programme has achieved notable success: in 2025, 94 percent of those participating in structured weight management lost weight, with 78 percent reducing their body weight by at least three percent, and nearly half achieving a clinically significant loss of five percent or more. Participants have also reported improvements in confidence, healthier eating practices, increased physical activity, and stronger family routines.

Targeted primarily at individuals from deprived areas, disadvantaged families, and communities that traditionally face obstacles to accessing healthy weight support, Liv Life Liverpool harnesses the collaboration of schools, healthcare professionals, community groups, and voluntary partners. This collective effort creates a cohesive system aimed at prevention, improving service accessibility, and helping residents sustain healthier lifestyles over the long term.

Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture at Liverpool City Council, commented, “We’re delighted that Liv Life Liverpool has been shortlisted for an RSPH Health and Wellbeing Award. It recognises the importance of supporting people to improve their health in ways that work for them and reflects the commitment of everyone involved in delivering the programme. Reducing health inequalities is one of our key priorities. By working with communities and partners across the city, we’re helping people build healthier habits, improve their wellbeing and access support closer to home. It’s fantastic to see that work recognised nationally.”

Professor Matthew Ashton, Liverpool’s Director of Public Health, added, “By taking a whole-system approach and working alongside communities and partners, the programme is helping people develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to make sustainable changes that improve their health. Being shortlisted by the Royal Society for Public Health is welcome recognition of the collaborative work taking place across Liverpool to reduce health inequalities and improve population health.”

The RSPH Health and Wellbeing Awards acknowledge organisations that make significant contributions to enhancing health and reducing inequalities. This shortlisting underscores Liverpool City Council’s commitment to preventative care and partnership-driven, community-based support aimed at helping residents lead healthier lives
