A 14-year-old boy has been formally charged with a terrorism offence after authorities uncovered an alleged plot targeting two mosques in London, connected to “extreme right-wing terrorism.” The Metropolitan Police initially detained the child at a south London residence on suspicion of damaging a vehicle. During the search, officers discovered several troubling documents.
The boy faces accusations of planning attacks on two places of worship located in Sutton and is currently held in custody. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, charged with preparing terrorist acts to occur on or before 9 July, alongside racially aggravated damage to property.
Detective Chief Superintendent Nick Blackburn, responsible for policing in south London, highlighted the broader context by referencing related incidents. He said, “These charges come just days after 12 people were arrested for a suspected threat to an Islamic festival in Suffolk and a man was arrested for an alleged assault outside a mosque in Leyton.” He emphasized the significant impact such repeated incidents have on the Muslim community, stating, “We should not underestimate the cumulative impact of incidents of this nature on the Muslim community.”
Commander Helen Flanagan, leading Counter Terrorism Policing in London, described the case as a “very serious terrorism charge against a young boy” and noted its particular sensitivity for the Muslim community. She also mentioned a rise in the involvement of children and young people in similar investigations. The Metropolitan Police confirmed collaboration with counter terrorism units in the ongoing investigation and have increased patrols in the targeted neighborhoods.
