Firefighters are facing a prolonged battle to control a large fire that has been burning on moorland in Greater Manchester since Saturday. The blaze initially ignited near Dove Stone Reservoir in Greenfield, Saddleworth, but has since merged with another fire several miles away on Tintwistle Moor near Glossop. The dry conditions combined with shifting winds have contributed to the fire’s continued spread.
Clive Stanbrook from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) explained that the dry environment and unpredictable wind patterns are making containment efforts difficult. To combat the blaze, emergency responders are using helicopters to drop water, while drones and aircraft have been deployed for reconnaissance missions. A 20-year-old woman has been charged with arson in connection with the incident.
The blaze on Tintwistle Moor, which began on June 24, was declared a major incident on Sunday due to the scale and severity of the situation. Stanbrook highlighted the extensive coordination involved: “Mountain Rescue have been absolutely fantastic and provided their drone. We’ve also had a coastguard plane as well to do reconnaissance of the actual area. That’s just a taste of the scale that we’re dealing with at the moment.”
Ben Levy, an area manager for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), anticipated that firefighters will remain at the site for multiple days, citing the lack of forecasted rainfall and continuing high temperatures.
