The DUP has announced that Gamble, who is affiliated with the iNEQE Safeguarding Group, will be responsible for conducting an Independent Focused Safeguarding Review concerning Donaldson’s period as a party member. This review aims to examine the party’s handling of relevant issues during that time.
A BBC Spotlight investigation recently uncovered that five years ago, two senior DUP officials became aware of separate allegations involving Donaldson, where a young woman claimed to have been “exploited” by him. These revelations have added urgency to the current review being carried out.
Earlier this year, Gamble was also entrusted with an external review of the governance and safeguarding protocols of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. This dual role has raised questions; specifically, the Northern Ireland Survivor Council expressed concerns about whether a single organization is capable of conducting both reviews independently and comprehensively. Consequently, they have urged the DUP to appoint a different safeguarding body for the political party’s investigation.
In response, Gavin Robinson emphasized his commitment to the review of Jeffrey Donaldson’s membership period. Speaking on Good Morning Ulster, Robinson stated, “I have engaged the UK’s foremost expert, I have no questions about his independence or capacity to do this review. This is to satisfy not only myself but in time the general public about what occurred within our party, what was known what could have been known and whether our safeguarding policies and procedures in place are correct or if they need to change.
