UK weather: Heatwave to intensify as it enters into second week

The United Kingdom is experiencing its third heatwave of the year, which is expected to intensify again this week following a brief cooling period on Monday. Temperatures across England and Wales are anticipated to rise once more, with many areas potentially surpassing 30°C. Some forecasts even predict that select locations could approach temperatures in the mid-30s Celsius. Scotland and Northern Ireland might also see heatwave conditions, as humidity gradually increases nationwide.

Currently, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber and yellow heat health alerts valid until 21:00 BST on 15 July. These warnings highlight the expected strain on healthcare and social services due to the high temperatures. There is particular concern over increased health risks for individuals aged 65 and older or those with pre-existing medical conditions, as the heatwave impacts could lead to a rise in mortality.

After some relief brought by cooler north-easterly winds and reduced humidity—especially in central and eastern parts of the UK—temperatures on Monday remain somewhat elevated, with southern England still reaching highs around 30°C. The heatwave threshold of 25°C might even be briefly met in parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Coastal areas along the North Sea are expected to stay cooler, with temperatures ranging between 16°C and 21°C. However, by midweek, an approaching low-pressure system over France will bring lighter easterly winds, causing humidity to build once again. This pattern will lead to increasing temperatures across much of the country, peaking on Thursday with widespread highs near 30°C and isolated spots possibly hitting 34°C or 35°C.

This year, the UK has already recorded nine days with temperatures reaching 34°C or above, breaking previous records set in 1976 and 2020. Night-time temperatures are also rising, and there is potential for several “tropical nights” where temperatures remain above 20°C. Heat health alerts have been extended in the West Midlands and southwest England, alongside yellow warnings for parts of northwest England, the East Midlands, eastern England, the southeast, and the London area. Meanwhile, the persistent dry and hot conditions are increasing wildfire risks, particularly in England and Wales. Although a slight easing in fire risk may occur due to lighter winds and a chance of showers, the threat is expected to intensify across central and eastern England as the week progresses.

Looking ahead, thunderstorms are possible in southern regions later this week, but a definitive cool-down remains uncertain. Weather models suggest that northerly winds could bring lower temperatures during the coming weekend. Nevertheless, it is still unclear how significant this drop will be, and there remains a possibility that high pressure will quickly return, prolonging heatwave conditions in some parts of the UK. Consequently, many areas are likely to experience continued dryness with little rainfall in the near term.
