Severn Trent, a major water supplier serving over eight million customers across England and Wales, has announced it experienced its highest ever demand for water. This surge surpassed previous peak usage recorded during both the 2022 drought and the Covid-19 pandemic periods. The company provides supplies to about 4.8 million homes and businesses in the Midlands region.
The utility highlighted that recent water consumption was not only considerably above normal levels but also remained elevated throughout longer periods each day, extending into nighttime hours. This increase coincided with the second heatwave of the summer, which brought sustained hot weather conditions. Over recent days, total daily water use approached nearly 2.4 billion litres, which is around 400 million litres more than typical consumption.

Severn Trent attributed some of this substantial rise in demand to increased domestic activities such as garden watering and filling paddling pools, which tend to intensify during hot spells.
In response to the unprecedented levels of usage, the company has urged customers to actively reduce their water consumption. By doing so, households and businesses can help manage the strain on water resources and ensure supply stability during the ongoing hot weather period
