Henry highlights, “We used to have one holiday a summer, now we have two [because of the savings we make from home exchanges]. What appeals most to Henry and his family is the chance to experience life as locals rather than tourists. During their 2024 visit to Hamburg, they stayed with a family in a suburban neighborhood, exploring nearby lakes as recommended by their hosts and living like a “German family” for the week. Their time in Copenhagen involved staying in a minimalist Scandinavian-style home set on a single level, complete with electric bikes provided by their hosts. This allowed them to cycle to the beach, swim in the Baltic Sea, and sample local restaurants, fostering a genuine connection with the area.
While some find the idea of hosting strangers in their homes daunting, others have successfully embraced home exchanging with reasonable preparation and flexibility. May Burrough from London, who has completed 34 swaps, shares her approach of hosting visitors in her flat while staying elsewhere to accumulate points on the HomeExchange platform, which can be redeemed for later trips. She warns that accepting swaps often requires patience, as “members typically send 10-15 messages before getting an offer,” and last-minute bookings can be difficult.
