Four arrested and officer hurt in Edgware Road violent disorder

Following France’s 2-0 victory over Morocco in the World Cup quarter-final, a late-night gathering on Edgware Road in central London escalated into violent disorder, resulting in the arrest of four individuals. The Metropolitan Police responded to reports on Thursday evening of a group blocking traffic, which then became hostile as bottles were thrown and fireworks were ignited.

During the disturbance, a police officer sustained head injuries after being struck by a glass bottle and was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment. Despite the violence, no other injuries were reported. Riot police attended the scene as footage shared on social media captured the fireworks and tense atmosphere.

Paul Swaddle, leader of Westminster City Council, condemned the behaviour, urging World Cup supporters to remain respectful throughout the remainder of the tournament. The Metropolitan Police emphasized their zero-tolerance stance on such disorder, stating, “We will not tolerate such disorder on our streets, or attacks on our officers.”

Authorities have committed to reviewing CCTV and social media footage to identify and bring all responsible parties to justice. The crowd eventually dispersed, and Edgware Road was reopened to traffic around 1:00 am BST
