Glazing over Richard III's grave was damaged by visitor's bottle – council

Experts are scheduled to remove the damaged glass panel and install a new triple-glazed replacement. The local council has assured that the work will be carried out with great care to safeguard the archaeological remains beneath and maintain the integrity of the scheduled ancient monument.

The cost of the repairs is estimated at just under £29,830, with the majority of expenses being covered through an insurance claim. During the period of repair, public access to the burial site will be restricted; however, the other areas of the visitor centre are expected to remain open as usual, according to representatives from the council.

Regarding the incident that caused the damage, a council spokesperson explained that the glass was shattered when a visitor accidentally dropped a bottle of Perrier. “A visitor sitting next to the grave site stood up, and the glass bottle of Perrier he had in the thigh pocket of his cargo trousers fell out and shattered on the glazed floor,” the spokesperson said. The broken bottle’s impact created a small chip on the top layer of the triple-glazed glass panel, which then caused a noticeable crack extending across the panel.

Assistant city mayor Vi Dempster expressed apologies for the disruption caused by the necessary repairs, emphasizing their importance. She stated, “These essential works will ensure that the historic grave site of King Richard III continues to be protected to the very highest standards, while allowing visitors to experience this globally important heritage site.
