George Gibney: Irish national swimming coach guilty of sex abuse and and attempted rape

A former national swimming coach from Ireland, George Gibney, has been found guilty of multiple counts of sexual abuse involving four young female athletes during the 1970s and 1980s. The 77-year-old was convicted after a jury deliberated for over seven hours and delivered their verdict on Monday afternoon at the Central Criminal Court. While Gibney originally faced 79 charges, he pleaded guilty to five counts at the start of the trial. The jury ultimately convicted Gibney on 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape, while acquitting him on 33 counts related to two of the complainants. Following the verdict, the judge ordered Gibney to remain in custody and scheduled his sentencing hearing for 29 July. RTÉ noted that after the verdict was announced, the women who brought forward the allegations shared embraces with friends, supporters, and members of the Irish police force (gardaí).

Gibney was extradited to Ireland from the United States last year to face these historic allegations. The Irish government requested his return to stand trial on charges involving four girls, who were between eight and 14 years old at the time of the offenses. Prior to this extradition, Gibney had not set foot in Ireland for more than three decades. He had been detained in Florida by US Marshals in July 2025.

The DPP reviewed the case and ultimately recommended that Gibney be formally charged
