Zack Polanski says he'll pay any council tax owed linked to houseboat

Zack Polanski, leader of the Green Party, has acknowledged that he will settle any council tax debt that may be outstanding, explaining that he had believed he was not responsible for the tax while residing on a houseboat in London. Polanski mentioned that determining the tax liability for living on a boat is complex. On BBC Breakfast, he clarified that the council has not made a final determination on whether he owes council tax, pointing out that residents at the marina typically pay business rates rather than council tax. He said, “The council have still not reached a decision because they’re saying that at the marina where I was living, largely they’re paying business rates, which is what I assumed was what I was paying instead of council tax.”

The Green Party leader also underlined his willingness to pay if it is confirmed that he owes any money. “I said to the council and I’ll say again, if I am found to owe any money, then of course I will pay that,” Polanski stated. He admitted he was unsure about the exact amount owed, but reiterated that the council’s position might ultimately find no liability due to the business rates already paid at the marina.

Earlier in the year, Polanski was cleared by the Greater London Authority following a complaint related to this issue. Waltham Forest council had indicated it was seeking legal advice regarding the “complex factors unique to moorings.” In May, the Green Party acknowledged that Polanski may have neglected to pay council tax on the houseboat that was his residence until recently, with the party confirming that he had apologized and taken steps to address any potential council tax owed
