Zachery Dereniowski: A 'kindness influencer' gave my family free World Cup tickets

Cormac Carville, a father from County Down, has shared how an unexpected act of kindness inspired him to be more compassionate. While visiting Toronto with his wife Catherine and their four sons, Carville had hoped to take his family to a World Cup match. However, the cost of around £2,000 for full admission was beyond his reach. What began as a simple family outing took a remarkable turn when his 14-year-old son Joshua spotted a familiar figure in the crowd outside the Portugal versus Croatia game at Toronto Stadium.

That recognizable face belonged to Zachery Dereniowski, a Canadian “kindness influencer” known for performing random acts of goodwill and sharing them on social media. With over 30 million followers, Dereniowski has built a reputation for generosity. Although Carville initially thought the offer was too good to be true, Dereniowski invited him and two of his sons to join the match inside the stadium. “I nearly fainted,” Carville admitted, recalling his disbelief. Walking to the stadium with Dereniowski and a Portuguese family who had also been gifted tickets, the reality set in only when he scanned the tickets on his phone at the turnstiles.

Despite this stroke of fortune, only three tickets were available for the six family members. It was decided that Carville and his two oldest sons, aged 14 and six, would attend the game in person, while Catherine and the two younger boys stayed back to watch the match on television. Inside the stadium, the atmosphere was electric. Carville described sitting among Portuguese supporters, witnessing the likes of Luca Modric playing for Croatia and Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal up close. The match itself was thrilling, ending in a 2-1 win for Portugal with a late goal in stoppage time. When Ronaldo successfully converted a penalty, the crowd erupted, and “all the beer started flying,” said Carville, underscoring the excitement of being at the heart of the celebration.

Reflecting on the experience, Carville praised the positivity stemming from Dereniowski’s actions at a time when negative news dominates headlines. “It’s nice to see a bit of positivity,” he said. The family, originally from Teconnaught near Downpatrick, had been enjoying their visit to Toronto to see relatives. Carville also noted the beauty of different cultures coming together through football, especially in a world where social media can often feel hostile. The highlight came when his younger son called the day “the best day of my life,” a sentiment reluctantly echoed by the usually reserved older boy, making the day truly unforgettable for the Carville family
