UK weather: Third heatwave of the year begins but how different will it be?

A third heatwave of the year has begun affecting parts of the United Kingdom, with temperatures expected to climb as high as 34°C for some areas by midweek. While this heatwave is anticipated to be less severe than the one experienced in late June—when temperatures reached a peak of 37.7°C—it is predicted to last longer.

The UK’s Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued yellow heat-health alerts for regions including the Midlands and southern England, which will remain in effect until 20:00 GMT on 11 July. According to UKHSA, the hotter conditions may cause minor disruptions in health and social care services, and there is an increased risk to vulnerable populations.

Northern parts of the UK will also see a rise in temperatures, but the weather is expected to remain unsettled with continued cloud cover and rainfall, particularly in western Scotland. Meanwhile, areas such as the Midlands, East Anglia, and south-east England can expect temperatures to reach around 31°C on Monday afternoon. These regions are set to meet the official heatwave criteria, as temperatures above 28°C become widespread over the coming days.

The heatwave is forecast to intensify midweek, with temperatures in England and east Wales rising into the high 20s and low 30s Celsius. The highest temperatures are likely to occur in London and south-east England, where it may reach around 34°C on Wednesday and Thursday. Although it is unlikely the mercury will surpass the late June peak of 37.7°C, some weather models indicate that temperatures could potentially reach the mid to high 30s this week. For context, the UK’s all-time temperature record of 40.3°C was set in July 2022 at Coningsby, Lincolnshire
