Barbara Mullaney, the well-known owner of Animal Fayre pet shop in Cricklade, has tragically passed away following a car collision that police are now treating as a murder investigation. The incident took place on the B4696 near Royal Wotton Bassett in Wiltshire. Mullaney, in her seventies, was driving a Peugeot 107 southbound when the crash occurred on Tuesday evening. Despite efforts to save her, she died at the scene.
Authorities have arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of murder in connection with the crash. He also faces charges related to attempted murder after a teenage passenger in his vehicle suffered serious injuries. The vehicle he was driving, a black Vauxhall Astra, was traveling northbound at the time of the accident. The injured teenager has since been discharged from hospital. Initially, the Vauxhall driver was detained on suspicion of causing death by driving while unfit through drink or drugs.
Wiltshire Police disclosed that several calls had been made concerning the suspect before the collision happened. Due to their previous interactions with him, the police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker from the major crime investigation team expressed his condolences: “My thoughts continue to be with the victim’s family and all that knew her.” He reassured the public, stating, “Please be reassured that there is no risk to the wider public and we are working to piece together the events which led to this tragic incident.”
The community of Cricklade has responded with heartfelt tributes to Barbara Mullaney. Messages and floral tributes have been placed outside her shop by many who were touched by her kindness. St Sampsons Church described her as “a light of kindness and care for owners and their pets” and has invited locals to light candles in her memory. Social media tributes highlight her friendly nature, with one recalling how she “always had time for a chat” and left visitors smiling. The heartfelt grief from the community reflects how deeply Barbara was loved and will be missed
