UK weather: Third UK heatwave increasingly likely as 30C temperatures forecast

A new heatwave is expected to touch the UK in the upcoming days, with temperatures forecasted to climb to 30°C in some areas. At present, a significant high-pressure system is developing, stretching from the Azores towards Portugal and Spain. This weather pattern is anticipated to push warmer conditions northwards. By the weekend, both southern Britain and France are predicted to experience increasing temperatures, reaching levels that meet heatwave criteria in certain locations.

According to preliminary Met Office data, last month marked the hottest June ever recorded for England and the UK’s second warmest June overall. In London and the south-east, a heatwave is defined by three consecutive days with temperatures at or above 28°C, whereas in northern parts of Britain, the threshold is set at 25°C. For most of this week, daytime temperatures are expected to remain just below these thresholds. However, by Friday, London and the Home Counties may experience temperatures around 28°C, and on Sunday, some parts of England could reach 30°C, potentially marking the earliest heatwave declaration this year.

The warming trend is set to continue into next week, particularly across southern regions of the UK, where temperatures could approach or surpass 30°C on multiple days. While day-to-day temperatures and locations of peak heat may vary, the prevailing westerly winds initially should help prevent extremely high temperatures similar to those seen in late June. Later in the week, there is some uncertainty surrounding a possible shift to southerly winds, which might cause temperatures to rise further.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued yellow heat health alerts covering regions including the East Midlands, East of England, London, south-east, and south-west England. These warnings indicate a heightened risk of heat-related health issues for vulnerable individuals. Unlike the previous heatwave, the air during this period is expected to feel less humid initially, potentially offering some relief despite the high temperatures. Northern parts of the UK, including Northern Ireland, Scotland, and northern England, are likely to remain cooler, with temperatures generally ranging between 20°C and 24°C as fresher Atlantic air influences these areas
