Frankie Dettori seriously injured in Newmarket car crash

Jockey Frankie Dettori has sustained multiple injuries, including several broken ribs and a fractured thumb, following a car accident, according to a statement from his management team. The incident took place on Wednesday evening close to Newmarket, Suffolk.

H Talent Management explained that another vehicle hit the rear passenger side of the car Dettori was driving, resulting in the vehicle spinning and overturning. At present, Dettori remains hospitalized for additional scans and monitoring as medical staff continue to evaluate the extent of his injuries.

In a message from his representatives, Dettori expressed his gratitude toward the emergency responders who attended the scene, as well as the doctors, nurses, and medical personnel providing care. “Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him,” the statement read. His management also requested privacy during his recovery and confirmed that no further updates will be provided until there is meaningful news.

Although Dettori has not competed in Britain since his victory on King of Steel at Ascot’s Champion Stakes in October 2023, he was scheduled to make a comeback in September at the Leger Legends race during the St Leger Festival in Doncaster. The crash, described by his management as an “accident,” occurred near the boundary between Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. Cambridgeshire police confirmed they responded to a collision on the A1304 London Road close to Six Mile Bottom at approximately 7:00 pm BST
