A former neighbour, who preferred to remain anonymous, reminisced about Andy Burnham’s teenage years, recalling that when they moved to the area, Andy was around 16 or 17 and nearing the age to leave for university. The neighbour mentioned how Burnham and his two brothers frequently played football in their garden, with the balls often landing in her own yard, meaning they would hear and see the boys quite regularly.
Her husband added that even in his youth, Burnham was an effective communicator with a knack for remembering people’s names. “We only really met him just before he went to university and he was obviously very good then, so he’d learned those skills quite early on,” he said, reflecting on Burnham’s early development of his interpersonal skills. Another local resident, Danni, who lives near Common Lane, noted that her son went to college with Burnham’s niece and that she occasionally spots the Labour politician in the local Sainsbury’s. She expressed excitement about the possibility of Burnham becoming the country’s next prime minister, describing him as “a very kind of down-to-earth guy” who might bring more attention to the north, which she felt had traditionally been overlooked in favor of the south-centric focus of Parliament.
A neighbor residing just a few doors away, Lindsay, acknowledged Burnham from his time as the Member of Parliament for Leigh before he transitioned to become the Mayor of Greater Manchester. Recently moving into the area, she shared her hopes for his success, saying, “I think it’s a good thing for the North, I do, hopefully, he’ll do really well.” She praised his hard work and dedication, asserting that he deserved his current position. Lindsay also recalled seeing Burnham frequently walking down Bradshawgate in Leigh, often approachable and available to chat.
Burnham has shown deep gratitude towards those who supported him early in his political career, particularly the late Paul Goggins, the former Labour MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East, who passed away in January 2014. Burnham described Goggins as his mentor, saying at Goggins’ funeral, “Every time I had a problem when I was first elected, I would call Paul Goggins – who do I call now?” Wyn Goggins, Paul’s widow, emphasized the closeness of their friendship, highlighting their shared northern roots, faith, and love of football. She acknowledged the assistance Paul provided to Burnham when he was first elected and expressed mixed feelings about Burnham’s potential rise to prime minister, noting the strain of media attention on his family but acknowledging their strength and his awareness of political life
