The Duke of Sussex is currently re-evaluating his plans to bring his wife and children to the UK next month following the rejection of his request for police protection, according to sources familiar with the matter. Prince Harry, along with Meghan and their two children, Archie and Lilibet, had intended to make their first family visit to Britain in four years. However, the formal application submitted by his team for taxpayer-funded police security while in the country was denied just days before their scheduled arrival.
The decision came after a review by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), responsible for determining security arrangements for senior members of the Royal Family on behalf of the Home Office. On Friday, following the announcement of the planned UK visit, Harry’s team was informed that no official police protection would be provided during their stay. Although police protection would be available when staying on a royal estate, outside of this, the family would have to depend on private security personnel accompanying them from California.
Harry and Meghan had accepted an invitation to stay on a royal estate as guests of King Charles, though details of the specific residence have not been disclosed. They were also expected to use private accommodation throughout their visit, which was scheduled to last approximately five days. Meghan planned to join Harry for several public appearances in London and the Midlands. The trip was arranged to mark the beginning of the year-long countdown to the Invictus Games, an event for injured military personnel set to take place in Birmingham next July, which Harry founded. Additionally, he intended to meet with UK-based charities he has supported since relocating to California.
Previously, Harry had declined offers to stay at Buckingham Palace during visits because of concerns over the building’s high profile and visibility. Last year, he lost a legal challenge seeking regular police protection during UK visits. In a BBC interview following the ruling, he expressed a hope for reconciliation with the Royal Family but also voiced worries about traveling to the UK with his wife and children, citing safety concerns. He said, “I can’t see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK at this point and the things they’re going to miss is, well, everything. You know I love my country, I always have done despite what some people in the country have done.” The most recent in-person meeting between the King and his grandchildren was at Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Meanwhile, Prince Harry last met with his father in September at Clarence House, marking their first face-to-face encounter since February 2024. A final decision on whether Meghan and the children will accompany Harry on the trip is expected soon
