Catherine completes Three Peaks Challenge to 'explore life beyond' cancer diagnosis

Catherine, the Princess of Wales, has successfully completed the demanding Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for the hospital where she received cancer treatment. She described the experience as an opportunity to “explore life beyond diagnosis and to give something back.” This endurance challenge involves climbing the highest mountains in England, Scotland, and Wales within a 24-hour period, and Catherine undertook it to support the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

The princess made public her cancer treatment in March 2024 and announced she was in remission at the beginning of 2025. Speaking on Sunday, she emphasized her desire to promote “holistic healthcare” for cancer patients, describing such care as vital to enhancing “wellbeing, resilience and quality of life during an exceptionally difficult time.” In a social media post featuring a photo of her at the summit of Ben Nevis, she reflected on how cancer affects not only the body but also the mind and emotions. “Cancer doesn’t just affect the body,” she wrote. “It changes how you think and feel and profoundly affects every aspect of life.”

Catherine underscored the importance of addressing the full scope of a patient’s experience with cancer. “I know this personally, and that the journey through and beyond treatment requires more than medicine alone,” she shared. She highlighted that holistic therapies, alongside traditional medical treatments, are integral in helping individuals manage the personal challenges of a cancer diagnosis. According to her, this whole-person approach supports patients’ ability to maintain their overall wellbeing and resilience throughout the difficult journey.

Upon completing the challenge in Wales, the princess was greeted by her family, including the Prince of Wales, their three children—George, Charlotte, and Louis—as well as her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, and her brother James. When Catherine initially disclosed her diagnosis, she described it as a “huge shock” and spoke of enduring an “incredibly tough couple of months.” Though details about her cancer were kept private, Kensington Palace expressed confidence that she would recover fully. The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity has set up a fundraising page in connection with the princess’s walk to enhance support for holistic care in cancer treatment. Dame Cally Palmer, chief executive of the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, praised the royal couple’s patronage and acknowledged the princess’s deep empathy for those facing cancer, thanking her for the impact her involvement will have on patients and their families
