Pollard emphasized that the current Labour government is actively strengthening the military by expanding strategic reserves and enhancing cooperation opportunities between reservists and regular service members. Meanwhile, the Conservative Party has committed to increasing the number of reservists by recruiting around 18,000 new personnel, aiming to reach a total strength of 50,000 reservists.
As of 1 January 2026, government statistics indicate that the combined trained and untrained personnel in the Army, RAF, and maritime reserves numbered over 32,000. The Conservatives have also expressed a focus on ensuring reservists fulfill their minimum training requirements, typically spanning between 19 and 27 days. Reservists who meet these obligations and successfully pass their military training tests receive a tax-free bonus, which in 2024/25 was awarded to 46% of reservists.
Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party, criticized the Labour government for indecision, pointing to John Healey’s resignation as defence secretary, which was reportedly due to concerns over insufficient funding in the defence investment plan. In the previous year’s Strategic Defence Review (SDR), the UK’s defence strategy shifted towards enhancing “warfighting readiness” to deter threats, pledging substantial investments in ammunition stocks, advanced aircraft, drones, and new attack submarines.
