London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports are currently experiencing significant flight disruptions due to stormy weather following a period of intense heat. Over 600 flights have faced delays of up to six hours, with dozens of cancellations reported, largely attributed to thunderstorms affecting the region. The UK’s air traffic control service has indicated that these delays are likely to persist throughout the day.
At Heathrow alone, FlightAware data shows that around 340 flights have been delayed, while Gatwick has seen approximately 320 flights impacted. Eurocontrol, the European-wide aviation agency, has highlighted that these two airports are the only UK locations currently suffering from severe weather-related delays. Some flights at Gatwick, such as an Easyjet service to Antalya, have seen departures pushed back by over six hours. British Airways and other airlines at Heathrow are also among those affected, with some delays reaching four hours.
The disruptions stem from temporary air traffic control restrictions implemented due to ongoing thunderstorms, particularly over southeast England. A spokesperson for Gatwick confirmed this to BBC News, noting that the restrictions have led to delays and cancellations since early Saturday morning. Easyjet released a statement apologizing for the disruption and explained that the severe weather was limiting arrivals and departures. The airline emphasized efforts to mitigate the impact on travelers by offering options such as rebooking, refunds, and accommodations where necessary, but stressed that the delays were beyond their control.
Passengers have voiced their frustrations on social media, with one traveler sharing that her daughter had been stuck onboard an Easyjet plane at Gatwick for four hours before the flight was cancelled. Another passenger reported being delayed on a British Airways flight at Gatwick from early morning until noon. Meanwhile, despite the heatwave and an amber Met Office warning for extreme heat in parts of eastern and southeastern England, thunderstorms continue to develop and intensify, especially in the south of the UK, further complicating travel plans
