Comedian and broadcaster Hardeep Singh Kohli is set to face trial on serious allegations including multiple charges of rape and other sexual offences involving four women. During a hearing at Glasgow’s High Court, Kohli’s legal team denied a total of 20 charges brought against him. These accusations, which cover a period from January 2006 to June 2021, specifically include five separate counts of rape relating to one woman.
Kohli, 57, hails from Kelvinside in Glasgow and is known for his appearances on celebrity editions of Big Brother and Masterchef, as well as his previous roles as a BBC reporter and panelist on Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff. The earliest claimed offence took place between mid-June and the end of July 2020, at a residence near Glasgow. It is alleged that Kohli raped the same woman multiple times at this location, and also committed similar offences involving two other women in Glasgow’s east end from June 2020 until February 2021. Additionally, the accusations include two assaults occurring within a two-day span in December 2020.
One of the final alleged rapes reportedly occurred in June 2021 at another Glasgow east end address, involving the same woman who was said to be intoxicated and unable to consent. Beyond the rape charges, Kohli faces four counts of sexual assault with regard to this woman. Among these, he is accused of making her wear a blindfold on one occasion and spitting on her during another. The charges extend to a two-year course of abusive behaviour, including demands for intimate photos, inquiries into her previous relationships, monitoring her movements, and persistent calls and texts. It is further alleged that he coerced money from her, locked her outside his home, showed up uninvited at her residence, and discarded food she had prepared for him. The indictment also states that Kohli sent her indecent messages and images of semi-naked women.
Other accusations against Kohli include indecent assault on a different woman at the BBC Scotland studios and the Radisson Hotel in Glasgow, along with a sexually-related breach of the peace at a restaurant. These events are said to have taken place between 2006 and 2008. He is also charged with sexually assaulting a third woman at the Cross Keys Hotel in Dumfries and Galloway in June 2008, and repeatedly assaulting a fourth woman at the University of Edinburgh in August 2011. Additionally, Kohli faces charges related to another incident involving the same woman in December 2016, where he allegedly grabbed her, kissed her on the mouth, and subjected her to threatening and abusive behaviour while pursuing her in a pub. Kohli did not attend the court hearing; his defence lawyer Sarah Livingstone entered not guilty pleas on his behalf and submitted a special defence of consent for some charges. The trial is set to begin on 1 October 2027
