An Irish boxer has extended an open invitation to Kendrick Lamar, offering the rapper the chance to spar with him anytime at his home gym. This connection between Aaron McKenna and the renowned American rapper began back in 2018 when McKenna was training in Los Angeles. At that time, McKenna was still a teenager and had only participated in a few professional boxing matches.
Currently, McKenna has returned to Smithborough in County Monaghan, where he trains at his family’s gym in preparation for his upcoming world title fight scheduled to take place in Dublin this August. He mentioned that sparring partners from the UK and the US frequently travel to join his sessions, and noted that Kendrick Lamar is always welcome to come by whenever he wishes.
The friendship developed when McKenna and his brother Stephen, who is also involved in boxing, encountered Lamar at the same gym. After Lamar had finished his training, Aaron and Stephen began eight rounds of technical sparring while the rapper observed. McKenna recalled the moment, saying, “Me and Stephen looked at each other straight away.” The brothers are naturally competitive, and Lamar’s presence during their sparring only motivated them further. Lamar reportedly remained to watch each round.
At the time, McKenna was living in California and found that he often crossed paths with Lamar at the gym. Reflecting on their interactions, McKenna described Lamar as a “real nice fellow, down to earth, no arrogance or nothing.” The two struck up a good rapport and formed what has become an unlikely friendship
