A remarkable natural spectacle was witnessed on a Welsh beach where the sea appeared to glow an electric blue at night. This captivating light show, caused by bioluminescent plankton, was visible at Penmon Point on Anglesey, attracting both photographers and local spectators on Saturday. The glowing waves create an almost magical effect as the tiny plankton emit light when disturbed by movement in the water.
One of the enthusiasts who traveled a considerable distance to capture this phenomenon was Paul Joels, a 44-year-old photographer from Nottinghamshire. Joels drove over seven hours to reach the location, joining others interested in photographing the glowing waves. He explained that bioluminescence is produced by microscopic creatures floating in the sea, which light up in response to threats or motion. Joels has a passion for nighttime photography and finds joy in the challenge of capturing these elusive natural displays.
Despite the allure, Joels noted that spotting bioluminescence often requires a great deal of planning and patience, as it is not guaranteed every time. He mentioned, “You never quite know if it’s all going to work out but that’s part of the enjoyment in a strange way.” His dedication to night photography and the unpredictable nature of the phenomenon combine to make these trips both exciting and rewarding.
Also present was Charlotte Kite, a photographer from Denbigh who had been attempting to photograph bioluminescence for over a year without success until she accompanied Joels on this occasion. Arriving late at night, she witnessed what she described as “electric blue lightning” splashing in the water. Kite emphasized the genuine brightness of the display, stating, “It really is as bright as how it looks in the photos, it’s not a camera trick.” The event highlights the wonder of bioluminescence, a natural chemical light produced by marine organisms that continues to fascinate those lucky enough to see it
