Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has stepped down from his role as leader of the Labour Party, coinciding with Andy Burnham being officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Makerfield.
In an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street earlier today, Starmer expressed gratitude to his wife and described the experience of becoming prime minister as the “proudest moment” of his life. He also revealed that he had spoken with the King and indicated that if a leadership contest takes place, a new Labour leader would be chosen before Parliament resumes in September.
Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, made the journey from Manchester to London for his swearing-in ceremony. He confirmed his intention to run for the position of Labour leader following Starmer’s resignation.
