Sturgeon and Gove to team up for reality TV 'wargame'

Nicola Sturgeon, the former first minister of Scotland, is set to join forces with former Conservative minister Michael Gove in an upcoming reality television programme. In this fictional scenario, Sturgeon will take on the role of deputy prime minister, while Gove assumes the position of prime minister, leading a UK government confronting a war with Russia.

The show, titled *The Wargame*, is a four-part series to be broadcast on Sky TV. Alongside Sturgeon and Gove, the fictional cabinet includes several notable political figures: Jim Murphy, former leader of Scottish Labour, will act as foreign secretary, and ex-Tory MP Dame Penny Mordaunt will serve as defence secretary. This cross-party team will simulate Cobra-style emergency meetings in response to a hypothetical Russian invasion on British soil.

Phil Edgar-Jones of Sky described the programme as a challenge to some of the country’s most seasoned political and military experts, asking them to envision how they might react under wartime conditions. He emphasized the show’s relevance, stating, “At a time when we are facing increasing threats from all sides, this series couldn’t be more timely.”

Sturgeon’s participation in *The Wargame* comes in the wake of controversy involving her estranged husband, Peter Murrell, who admitted to embezzling over £400,000 from the SNP during his two-decade tenure as the party’s chief executive. Murrell is set to be sentenced soon after pleading guilty to spending the stolen money on items such as cars, a motorhome, and cosmetics. While Sturgeon has denied any involvement or knowledge of the misconduct, describing herself as having been “deceived, betrayed and lied to,” her critics have seized on the timing of her TV appearance. Tory MP Douglas Lumsden remarked that the decision to join a lucrative television project while Murrell awaits sentencing would raise eyebrows, cautioning that the show’s challenge might extend beyond politics to recognizing obvious signs of deceit. Similarly, Scottish Labour’s deputy leader Jackie Baillie called Sturgeon’s move “bizarre” and said it would not deflect attention from unresolved questions about her husband’s criminal actions.

Scheduled to air in September, *The Wargame* also features other prominent figures, including Labour’s Baroness Harriet Harman as home secretary, Tory Baroness Sayeeda Warsi as attorney general, and Labour Baroness Ayesha Hazarika as director of communications. Retired British Army general Sir Richard Barrons will appear as chief of defence staff, with former diplomat Lord Kim Darroch acting as national security adviser. The UK cabinet’s efforts will be opposed by a panel of Russia experts, led by British author Keir Giles, with additional international roles played by Anthony Scaramucci as US secretary of state and Lord George Robertson as Nato secretary general
