A ticket inspector who was injured in a collision between two trains near Bedford on Friday has been commended for his bravery in assisting fellow passengers despite his own pain. The crash, involving two East Midlands Railway services heading to London St Pancras, resulted in the death of a train driver and injuries to approximately 100 people.
Mareks Grabovskis, a passenger on one of the trains, witnessed the inspector’s efforts and shared with the BBC, “I could see he was in pain himself, but he was telling someone on the radio to close the lines, and checking if everyone else was OK.” The collision occurred around 17:15 BST, and Grabovskis described the chaos, saying he was flung through the carriage, briefly lost consciousness, and when he regained awareness, he saw people seriously injured and in distress.
The aftermath of the crash has caused significant disruption to rail services between London and Bedford, with repairs expected to take up to a week. Blake Stephenson, the MP for Mid Bedfordshire, detailed the scale of the restoration work required, noting that about 600 meters of track need replacing and that removing overhead wires and damaged carriages will delay reopening. “The teams will work at pace but there’s an awful lot of work to do,” he said.
Commuters have been facing extended travel times and delays, with replacement bus services running between Luton and Bedford. Many have expressed frustration but thanked railway staff for their support during this challenging period. For example, Bernie Casey, who usually commutes from Bedford to London, chose to work from home due to the delays, commenting, “I mean, my heart goes out to the people who were affected in the crash on Friday… as soon as I arrived people were here to give advice and assistance.” Others, like Megan Hughes and Feby Thomas, shared similar experiences of disrupted journeys but praised frontline staff for their efforts to provide information and assistance amid the ongoing disruption
