Wowcher, a discount deals website, has issued an apology following controversy over a recent marketing email that appeared to make light of a crocodile attack involving a young child. The incident that sparked the backlash involved a three-year-old boy who was reportedly attacked by one or more crocodiles after entering their enclosure during a family visit to Johnsons of Old Hurst, a zoo near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire.
The problematic email was sent out to Wowcher customers on Saturday, featuring a list of offers related to trips and activities. The subject line read: “Snap up these deals quicker than a croc can catch a kid!” This phrasing prompted outrage when screenshots of the email circulated on social media. In response, Wowcher issued a statement expressing deep regret for the inappropriate wording and described it as “unacceptable.”
A spokesperson from Wowcher acknowledged that the email should never have been sent, stating that it was never approved for use and that the company is currently investigating how their processes failed. They also conveyed sympathy for the affected family, saying, “We recognise the hurt and distress it has caused, particularly for the young child’s family at this unimaginably difficult time.” The company confirmed that they are reviewing all upcoming marketing materials and implementing stronger approval measures to prevent similar mistakes.
The incident with the boy took place on Thursday, with emergency services responding at 13.24 BST after being alerted by the ambulance service. Police noted that the child, who was not known to the man on site, sustained serious injuries while inside the enclosure. Public reactions to the email included customers expressing disgust, with some unsubscribing from Wowcher’s communications and demanding accountability, including calls for staff dismissal. Wowcher reiterated their sincere apology and assured customers they would take all necessary steps to prevent a recurrence
