John Edwards has stepped down from his role as the UK’s information commissioner after a workplace inquiry found issues related to his conduct. Edwards, who had led the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) since early 2022, acknowledged that on certain occasions his attempts at humor were inappropriate and caused offense. In an official statement released on Friday, he accepted responsibility for these lapses in judgment.

The ICO is responsible for ensuring businesses properly manage personal data and investigating potential violations. It can impose substantial fines for serious breaches, including penalties up to £17.5 million or 4% of a company’s global turnover, whichever is greater. One of the ICO’s recent enforcement actions resulted in a £14 million fine against Reddit for using children’s data unlawfully and failing to verify users’ ages adequately
